A Hail of a storm

There is still hail on the ground in Santa Rosa, New Mexico this morning...... left over from Wednesday evening's hail storm that dropped over a foot of hail. Santa Rosa is about 100 miles east of Albuquerque.

This was the scene yesterday about 18 hours after the storm.

The high plains into the Rockies have the most hail days a year. The is a small maximum over southeast Kentucky. Possibly due to additional lift as a storm approaches the mountains.

The largest average size of hail occurs over the eastern plains of Colorado into the Denver area.

In the Midwest, about 1-2% of the total crop is lost each year due to hail. In the high plains, about 5-6% of crops are damaged each year by hail.
